Things just wrapped up on a recent job for some simple display cabinets, which made me realize how funny of a word ‘simple’ can be.

These are three door (top) and two door (bottom) display cabinets: red oak frames dyes a deep red (the color in the photos is quite off, p.s.) with a felted back panel, some knobs, hinges, wooden ‘L’ brackets, a handle and a clasp. Simple stuff. The real truth of the matter was quite a different story, about 70 hours different (I planned for 24!). There were a few issues with figuring things out; a few steps that could have been done differently. In the end, unfortunately, there is not much could change in terms of production if it all happened again.

However, I realized that these are the things that need to happen every once and a while. Projects like this  force you to check in with reality when getting into the next project; to stand back and think about how long something will actually take, even when it appears quite simple (and to remember how awesome spring clamps can be!).

All in all, things worked out, and the job got done, which is, in the end, the most important part.

Cheers,
Shaun M. Baer
