Core 77 had a post today about HallMfg creating 24 chairs in 24 hours. Some pretty interesting stuff came up, but more importantly, there was some major brain challenging going on.

The chairs were built in six four hour periods. I’m a little confused as to whether or not Andy, the builder of these chairs, from HallMfg designed them within the hour or not, but I presume that he did.

The really exciting thing about this is just the shear thrill of making and doing it at a fast pace. I find that when I am really focused on making a great design, I can’t think of anything interesting to do. I get stuck looking at what already exists, and how to incorporate those elements, but expanding upon them can be tricky. When you only have an hour, you just have to make it happen. And when you do that in multiple, everything becomes an evolution, and a way to explore things in a way that SketchUp doesn’t allow you to. The act of making and designing on gut feeling facilitates ideas much better than considering history, to a certain level, considering that to expand upon things requires a knowledge of history. It’s unconcious competence, which I recently heard about and like the philosophy behind.

Check out all of the photos, and the Core 77 post, here, and the HallMfg site here.

Cheers,
