Oh, Hello Internet (or Replicant Prototypes, Part Deux)

August 3rd, 2010 § 0

So, it’s been quite a while, dear internet! Things have been pretty busy in ways that do not involve working in the studio as of late, primarily due to that awful summertime phenomenon called “heat”. And for a stretch there, it was pretty awful. Glue turned to water; tool surfaces hot and sweaty without even being used; sawdust sticking to beads of sweat. Just bad news in general.

But alas, as a result of slow moving projects, the blog has suffered as well, and I thought it about time to post a few prototype photos from a month or so ago and give a few thought process updates. And cue photo:

Thar she is. The Man in Black, or at least that’s the currently title, wrapped with a plaid seat. As far as the prototyping process goes, it seems to me the back an inch or two too short, the seat needs to be tilted a few more degrees, and I really need to consider inter-leg support. So, it’s almost there.

As far as the long term plan, I have dubbed the chair “Replicant” with plans to invite friends to design chairs, meaning, choose colors, fabrics, a few of the materials, etc., though the basic skeleton will remain the same.  After the next round (or rounds, depending on what plays out) of prototyping is complete, Hopefully you might see some of those designs start creeping out.

So there that is! Hopefully I’ll be back to remembering the internet on a regular basis. A recent studio cleanup has the studes looking pretty nice, so maybe I’ll take a few shots of that….but we’ll just have to see about that.

Cheers,
Shaun Baer

Design Milk just had a post on this house built by Guz Architects. It’s pretty amazing, to say the least, and definently worth a look, provided you can spare a few minutes for daydreaming about napping in hammocks and what type of amazing spy/man of mystery life you must live to own this place.

Update: Apparently Design Milk doesn’t allow their photos to be reblogged, so as a result, I had to take the photos down. Just be sure to visit the Guz Arch link above and check out the “Fish House”!

On A Matter of Blogging…..

Permit me, if you will, for me to take a little wood break and rant for a while about the world of the internet. I know, you probably want to stop reading now, but when 100 degree temperatures keeps you in front of a computer in the a.c. all day, you start thinking about these things, ya know? But, as it is quite the rant, I’ll keep the majority for after the jump and spare you the front page details!

Sometimes You Eat the Job, and well, Sometimes the Job Eats You

July 7th, 2010 § 0

Things just wrapped up on a recent job for some simple display cabinets, which made me realize how funny of a word ’simple’ can be.

These are three door (top) and two door (bottom) display cabinets: red oak frames dyes a deep red (the color in the photos is quite off, p.s.) with a felted back panel, some knobs, hinges, wooden ‘L’ brackets, a handle and a clasp. Simple stuff. The real truth of the matter was quite a different story, about 70 hours different (I planned for 24!). There were a few issues with figuring things out; a few steps that could have been done differently. In the end, unfortunately, there is not much could change in terms of production if it all happened again.

However, I realized that these are the things that need to happen every once and a while. Projects like this  force you to check in with reality when getting into the next project; to stand back and think about how long something will actually take, even when it appears quite simple (and to remember how awesome spring clamps can be!).

All in all, things worked out, and the job got done, which is, in the end, the most important part.

I’m Likin’ This

June 28th, 2010 § 1

Hectic is a word that just rolls off of my tongue at this moment in time, and as such, the ol’ blog has been put on the back burner. But I have a little bit of time right now, and thought I would make a quick post of the Treasury Table made by Process that I found on Design Milk the other day (that was quite a stitching of names and links there, right?).

I’m feelin’ that sandblasted glass top that lets you see just barely see into all those drawers. It’s great for people who are able to be hyper organized and make it look good.

The only thing that is iffy for me here are the legs. There’s just something about the shape they end up making, but all of those drawers and their arrangement allows me to overlook them for the most part.

The New Chairs are still in the making, maybe I will take a photo of The Man in Black to post here is a few days. The other one, meanwhile, is still waiting in the wings until some in-house jobs get completed.

See you in the future.

Cheers,
Shaun
